April is National Safe Digging Month

What to Know Before You Install EZ Fence2Go

April is National Safe Digging Month! As the warmer weather approaches, and all you DIY-ers are preparing to get into your yard and start your home improvements, make sure you prepare your yard for your fence installation. Don't forget to properly mark out your utility lines. National Safe Digging Month serves as a reminder to all people who excavate or dig to call 811, at least 72 hours before digging, to have the approximate location of their utility lines marked. This process helps prevent injuries, property damage, and inconvenient utility outages.

·         exactly where your property line is.
·         Locate underground utilities.
Underground utility lines will affect where your fence posts can be placed.
·         Research local zoning codes and restrictions.
Some cities and neighborhoods have restrictions on fencing.
·         Check for obstructions.
·         Check where frost line is.
·         Mark and measure your yard.
Note: Where there are sections of yard less than 8 feet in length, panels can be cut down.
·         Place a stake in each corner of your yard and every 8 feet, as that is where posts will go.
·         Add up all your measurements and divide by 6 or 8, depending on the fence series/fence width you chose.
·         Think about where you would place your gates if you are going to have any.

More Information on National Safe Digging Month

National Safe Digging Month (NSDM) began in 2008 as a way to encourage all CGA (Common Ground Alliance) stakeholders to promote the safe digging message in one voice during one strategic month when digging activity begins in earnest nationwide.
Traditionally, April brings with it a ground swell of outdoor work which often includes digging.  Whether it is a small project or a large home improvement project, National Safe Digging Month is a way to remind us all to call 811 before starting any digging project.

Did you know every six minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone decided to dig without first calling 811.  The risk of injury or even death is serious.  Beyond the devastating risks of death or injury, consider the costs of repair, fines and even inconvenience.  From putting in a fence, planting a tree or building a deck, knowing where the power and water lines before you dig will save a lot of time, money and pain later.  Call 811 before you dig.
